Located in the village of Nerkin Hand in Armenia’s Syunik Province, the “Sos Forest” reserve of the Zangezur Biosphere Complex is the largest grove of Oriental plane trees in the region. It was established in 1958 with the purpose of protecting and restoring the Oriental plane tree species, which is listed in Armenia’s Red Book of Plants. Seventeen species found in the reserve are included in the Red Book of Armenia.
The main attraction of the reserve is the centuries-old plane tree, whose hollow can accommodate 20–25 people at once. The reserve also includes a nursery dedicated to the reproduction of the Oriental plane tree, where other valuable tree species are grown as well.
The Oriental plane tree is considered sacred — a symbol of purity and grandeur. The “Sos Forest” is surrounded by several local legends, which visitors can learn about during hikes or educational programs organized by the “Zangezur Biosphere Complex” SNCO.
