The Khustup-Katari mountain range stretches about 40 km and is a southern branch of the Bargushat Mountains. Mount Khustup rises to 3201 m.
It is a specially protected natural area and is part of the “Khustup” reserve within the “Zangezur” Biosphere Complex. The mountain range is rich in flora and fauna, with many species listed in the Red Book of Armenia. During hikes, it is possible to see groups of Bezoar goats. Khustup is considered a sacred mountain.
Among the people, it is known as “the Hermit.” According to one etymology, the name comes from the Hurrian root “khutu,” meaning “prayer.” Since ancient times, the mountain has been a place of worship and pilgrimage. In the Kapan Geological Museum, there is a preserved photograph from 1919 showing the residents of Kapan celebrating Vardavar. On the slope of Khustup stands a bronze bust of Garegin Nzhdeh. Mount Khustup has long been a source of inspiration for Kapan’s artists and is reflected in many of their works.
