History of the Museum

The Kapan Museum of Modern Art opened in 1990 on the initiative of Henrik Igityan, a renowned Armenian art historian. It became the first regional branch of the Yerevan Museum of Modern Art and remains an important center of cultural life in Syunik.

The museum was founded by Boris Minasyan. In its early years, the museum exhibited works by prominent artists of the time, including Rafi Adalyan, Rudolf Khachatryan, Anatoly Grigoryan, the Kalents family of artists, and other creators.
The museum's collection comprises approximately 485 works of art, including paintings, sculptures, graphic art, and decorative and applied arts.
Challenges and Revival
Throughout its history, the museum has faced numerous challenges. In 1992, a fire broke out, and the museum was restored in 1993, preserving its valuable collection.
In 2021, the museum underwent renovation, giving it a modern appearance while retaining its historical charm.

Collection and Artistic Movements
The museum's main mission is to showcase contemporary Armenian art and offer local residents and tourists an opportunity to see the world from a fresh, creative perspective.
Its collection features works representing Socialist Realism alongside modernist styles, reflecting artistic exploration and the spirit of freedom that emerged during Armenia's early years of independence.

Exhibitions and Cultural Events
The museum regularly hosts solo and group exhibitions featuring artists from Kapan and other parts of Armenia. Notable exhibitions include:
  • “Autumn 2013” — an exhibition that resulted in the publication of a book.
  • “I Remember and Demand” (2015) — an exhibition dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide.

Educational and International Activities
The museum serves not only as an exhibition venue but also as an educational space. Students from the State Art College and local art schools complete practical training there.
The museum also collaborates with international organizations. For example, children's exhibitions and individual creative projects have been organized with the support of World Vision Armenia.
Over the years, the museum has welcomed numerous distinguished visitors from countries including Germany, Belarus, and Russia, as well as from the United States, including the city of Glendale.

The Museum Today
Today, the Kapan Museum of Modern Art continues to bring together the past and the present, art and community. It remains an important cultural destination in Syunik, offering visitors the opportunity to explore the diverse world of contemporary Armenian art.
Admission is free, making it an excellent opportunity to discover Armenia's artistic heritage in the heart of Syunik.
