Kapan Greek Church

It is located about 16 km from the city of Kapan.

The Kapan Greek Church was constructed in the 19th century by Greeks who had settled in Kapan. Greek merchants and craftsmen who moved to the region established their own community, coexisting with the Armenian population. The church functioned as a spiritual and cultural center for the Greek community, hosting religious ceremonies and public events.

The architecture of the church combines Armenian and Greek elements. Local stone was used in its construction, and the interior is adorned with traditional Christian iconography. The church also had a school where Greek community children were educated in their native language.

In the 20th century, as political and demographic conditions in the region changed, the Greek community dwindled, and the church’s role diminished. However, it remains an important part of Kapan’s cultural heritage and is preserved as a historical monument today.
Today, the Kapan Greek Church serves as a reminder of the city’s multicultural past and symbolizes intercultural connections. It is included in Armenia’s list of historical monuments and is protected as an important cultural heritage site.
