Davit Bek

The David Beck Monument is located in the center of town.
David Bek was born in the late 17th century, presumably in the Tavush or Artsakh region. The first known records about him date back to 1722-1728, during Peter I's Persian campaign, when Armenians once again attempted to free themselves from foreign rule. David Bek was invited to Syunik by Armenian rulers, who entrusted him with leading the region’s liberation movement.

Between 1722 and 1728, under David Bek's leadership, Armenians successfully resisted Ottoman and Persian armies, gaining control over Kapan, Gughtan, and nearby regions. He restored Syunik’s military-political structure, established centralized governance in Kapan, and strengthened Armenian military forces. Under his command, the Armenian army achieved victories in the battles of Halidzor and Khndzoresk, which were crucial for Syunik’s defense.

Despite David Bek’s efforts, after his death in 1728, Armenian rule gradually weakened under the pressure of foreign powers. However, his heroic struggle became an inspiration for future generations, and Syunik’s resistance had a significant impact on later Armenian liberation movements.
Today, David Bek’s name is associated with the Armenian people’s identity and fight for freedom. His memory is immortalized in various places across Armenia through monuments, street names, and historical studies.
